Remote Monitoring Using SMS Messaging

From the Cross - Automation Group

Cross Company introduces a system for monitoring remote assets using SMS (text) messaging.  The SMS messaging system takes advantage of the industry standard text messaging system to automatically monitor remote assets and systems. The solution leverages the commercial cellular telephone system to allow M2M communications between machines and for critical operational data to be logged into Excel. The Excel data log can then be sorted and manipulated to produce any format of report required to manage the remote asset.

Operation:
A controller is programmed to meet the requirements for each remote asset, including configuration of SMS messages to provide the required data and alarm status for the asset. Based on the pre-programmed configuration, the controller will generate a SMS message either on a timed based schedule or on an event. The SMS message is received at the SMS Gateway and logged into a .CSV format file for use in Excel. The message can also be converted into an OPC tag for integration into any OPC-compatible client software such as a SCADA system or human-machine interface system. The SCADA system can be further configured to extract data embedded in the SMS message for alarming and data logging into a SQL or Access database. Monitor any type of remote asset using low cost SMS messaging services.

Features:
  • low cost monitoring of remote assets using SMS messaging
  • SMS Gateway logs all messages to Excel file, conerts to OPC tag for SCADA integration, or displays message log with integrated web server
  • Wide variety of controllers and interfaces available to meet the asset requirements
  • Data rates as low as $6 per month
Remote Monitoring / Solutions and Applications
Stand-by Power Generators: monitor water build-up in fuel storage tank to prevent sludge and unexpected service calls
Recycling Logistics: monitor cardboard balers for optimization of collection routes
Packaging Machines: monitor use of vendor managed inventory usage for efficient supply logistics
Mobile Equipment: any type of mobile equipment such as road paving and construction, agricultural, portable power and pumping
Parking Garage: control and status information at entrance and exit locations for parking systems
Irrigation Equipment: operational control and monitoring of remote pumping and fertilizer inventory control locations
Fountain and Water Art: control and monitor operation of pumping systems
Aquaculture Installations: monitor and control pumping systems, water chemical analysis, etc.
Municipal Water and Wastewater Systems: control and monitor critical infrastructure assets including pumping stations, lift stations, stand-by generators, safety shower operation, etc.
Productivity Monitoring: information on real-time performance of OEM equipment
Boat and RV: monitor key parameters including termperature and humidity, etc.

"Collected data, converted into information, is of critical value to the operational productivity of all types of systems"

Cross Company has also partnered with Engine Technologies to offer an on-line, real-time engine oil condition monitoring system. The monitoring system
can quantify the viscosity and emulsification levels of the engine oil, as well as alarm based on the introduction of any water or fuel mixing with the oil. The system also monitors engine oil temperature. These parameters are data logged for monitoring, alarming, and supervisory review using the integrated
web server in the system. For remotely located engine systems, an optional GSM/GPRS cellular communications interface is included with the
system for remote SMS messaging, e-mail alerts, and e-mailed reports of overall system operation.

This is one of the first low cost, real-time engine oil condition monitoring system available. The capability to monitor a critical engine component such as engine oil allows owners to get the maximum utilization and return on investment.
