Coriolis Mass Flow Meters

Two parallel flow tubes inside the MassFlo meter are rotated at their resonant frequency by coils and any mass flowing through the tubes will generate Coriolis forces. These forces have opposed effects on the inlet and outlet side and slightly deform the tubes. Sensors inside the flow meter measure the deformation of the tubes. The phase shift between the rotational frequencies of both tubes is proportional to the mass flow rate.

The resonant freqeuncy of the tubes changes in accordance with the density of the medium, which is used to determine density. The extent of deformation of the pipes depends on temperature so the temp is measured for compensation purposes. Then using one sensor primary values as mass flow, density and temperature can be measured. Conversions allow for calculation of additional values such as volumetric and concentration.

If you need highly reliable color sensing technology, consider Omron's E3MC RGB color sensor - it can accurately detect extremely small differences up to four similar colors. Ideal for food & beverage packaging, printing operations or any application requiring precise color differentiation. It has a unique threshold sensitivity adjustment which allows users to change the threshold levels to one of several 'fine' or 'coarse' settings in order to distringuish between very similar colors. It can even distinguish between different levels of white.

Omron E3MC / RGB Color Sensor

The E3MC discriminates differences in color without being influenced by ambient temperature changes, brightness or positioning of object being sensed. It detects colors by knowing that the reflection ratio of the primary color - Red, Blue or Green - refelected by an object varies with the chromaticity of the object. By using FAO (free angle optics), the sensor emits red, green and blue light on a single optical axis so the light will be reflected by sensing objects. The E3MC receives the light reflected by the sensing objects through the receiver and processes the red - green - blue ratio of the light to discriminate the color of the sensing objects.

The new 620 Series piston pump from Eaton signifies a stepchange in the generation of hydraulic power. It utilizes the latest developments in hydraulic pump technology and is specifically designed for moderate flow, high pressure applications.

The 620 is currently available in 98cc displacement with future development plans for 65cc, 74cc and 120cc displacements. With a wide range of pump controls, the 620 is rated for 280 bar and 2200 rpm making it the ideal pump for various mobile and stationary applications.

More power in a smaller and compact package: length - 11.4 inches and capable of generating over 134 HP. This increased power generation allows equipment manufacturers to provide more hydraulic power with a smaller displacement pump. And, as the shortest pump in its class, the 98cc is able to fit where other pumps can't.

The Fluid Power Group at Cross works closely with Norfolk Southern’s Charlotte staff to provide hydraulic components, custom manifolds, electronic controls and system design assistance. They are almost constantly involved in projects that help improve the design and function of the machines shown below. In addition, FPG works closely with some of NS’s largest equipment suppliers to help them accomplish their mutual machine design goals.

Track Work Then & Now - Track Machines are Constantly Evolving

Norfolk Southern is an industry leader in the development of machines used to maintain railroad track. With support from its Charlotte Roadway Shop, NS has been an innovator of roadway equipment, resulting in safer, more efficient, and more economical operations.

"We're looking for a better mousetrap every day with everything we do. It's a never-ending process. If we can't buy it, we build it" says NS chief engineer Mike Reid. The railroad's push toward mechanization begain the 1950s by figuring out ways to automate labor-intensive track work. An early success was a machine that removed and inserted crossties, a job that once required a crew of men to lift rail, drag out worn ties by hand, shovel ballast, and push in new ties. Now, track equipment of all kinds operates across the system.

Below are examples of machines that NS gangs operate down a track in assembly-line fashion:

(A) Tie Handling Machine: cranelike machine equipped with a mechanical arm that picks up and moves crossties

(B) Spike Puller: pulls spikes out of crosstie plates

(C) Magnetic Spike Pick-Up Machine: collects uprooted spikes with revolving magnetic wheel that knocks rust and dust off the spikes before dropping them in a storage bin

(D) Anchor Spreader: spreads existing tie anchors to allow a new crosstie to be inserted under the rail and between the anchors, which are secured on each side of a tie to add track stability

(E) Tie Remover Inserter: grips and jacks up rail as an operator manipulates a hydraulic arm to remove or insert ties

(F) Tie-Plate Jack: grips and lifts rail so that tie plates can be properly positioned atop new crossties. They are operated remotely by hand-held wands, which are used to position tie plates

(G) Tie-Plate Broom Cribber: sweeps ballast off ties and plates with a revolving "broom" of fingerlike rubber strips

(H) Nipper Spiker: pulls crossties tight against the rail and drives spikes through the tie plate into the tie.

(I) Ballast Regulator: sculpts ballast around ties and rail with front and rear plows and side wings

(J) Mark VI and Switch Tamper: tamp ballast in a honeycomb pattern under and around crossties with metal clawlike devices. The Mark VI can lift rail and is equipped with a computerized laser system that enables the operator to set proper rail alignment and elevation.

(K) Anchor Adjustor: squeezes tie anchors into place

(L) Anchor Applicator: replaces broken or missing tie anchors

(M) Track Broom: fills any voids left in the track with ballast and gives the track a final sweep

How does it operate?
2 independent transmission types: hydrostatic & mechanical - shifting from one to another is simply done by activating a switch. Mechanical used for the road, hydraulic counterpart is used for work. Mechanical brakes are spared as hydrostatic brakes are sufficient to stop the vehicle.

The CDM170-050 motor is at the heart of the system. Mechanically linked to the transmission shaft at its input and output, it is placed between the transmission and the differential. It can fit every type of transmission brand with its light and compact package. Plus it eased the remote control of the machine.

At low speed, the electronic control takes care of starting the vehicle smoothly, cruise control and safe braking. This allows the driver to focus on the quality of work rather than the driving functions.

Escaping a Fire....Draeger Parat Escape Hood came in very handy

On Saturday, January 19, 2002 at approximately 9:00am Dennis Mushol awoke to fire alarms going off in his 31 story, 450 Unit Condominium building in Chicago, IL. This wasn’t Dennis’ 1^st time to awake to fire alarms. In March of 2000 he survived a fire in an apartment two doors down in the same building. Dennis Mushol is a 15 year veteran police officer with the Chicago Police Department and as you can imagine, he may find extraordinary circumstances like this a bit routine. But after experiencing the thick smoke in the fire of 2000, he decided to prepare himself by purchasing a rechargeable fireman’s flashlight and a Parat C smoke escape hood. In addition to this he thought up an escape plan and began to put suitable escape clothes out nightly beside his bed.

All that preparation paid off for Dennis because not even 2 years later he found himself in yet another apartment fire. He was on the 18th floor this time on Saturday morning when the fire alarm went off, but this time he was ready. He grabbed his flashlight, got dressed and put on the Parat Mask. “Having the Parat Mask knocked down the panic I was feeling so I could think of my plans and how to get out.” said Dennis. He purchased the mask directly from Draeger and did most of his shopping and research for the product on the Internet. “At first I was going to purchase a Self Contained Breathing Apparatus, but they were too expensive, so I did a search on Fire and Smoke Protection and Smoke Hoods and up came hits for the Parat and the Evacuate. I decided on the Parat because it seemed like a quality filter and it was an overall better deal. I’ll tell you, it was the best investment I ever made.” He said.

Dennis practiced putting the mask on and taking it off. He said, “In a panic situation, the last thing you have time for is reading instructions and learning how to do something. I took it out of the box when I got it, but kept everything that needed to stay sealed in place. When the fire alarms went off, I put it on really fast. It was simple. All I had to do was pull tabs off the filter and I was ready.”

Just then his friend on the 17th floor called him in a panic. “My friend was very upset and I didn’t have an extra hood for her, so I went downstairs, soaked a towel in water, wrapped it around her head and doubled it around her face. It was the best I could do without another hood.” They both proceeded along with Dennis’ evacuation plan to head down the stairwells.

Several weeks before this fire there had been a rash of small fires set in the building along with hate messages taped onto the elevator walls. This time a total of four fires were set, on the 30th floor, 31st floor, 4th floor and in the basement. “The largest fire was set in the basement of the building.” Said Mr. Mushol. “The basement has a lot of chain link type lockers where people store everything, like their Christmas decorations, coolers and items like that, so the fire was really bad down there. The heat was so intense that even though the fire didn’t actually reach my storage area, the heat melted just about everything plastic in it. My luggage even melted and collapsed. The basement is next to the stairway and elevator and they had a chimney effect carrying the smoke through the whole building, but the smoke was thickest in the stairwells.”

Unfortunately not only were the stairwells thick with smoke, but they were crammed with people trying to escape. “You know, this could have been a real catastrophe with people collapsing. “In the opposite stairwell to where Dennis was trying to escape, a longtime resident of the building died of smoke inhalation as he tried to make his way down the stairs from his 9th floor apartment according the Cook County medical examiner’s office. Police said his body was found on the fifth-floor stairwell. “I’m 100% convinced if he had one of these hoods he would have lived. He would have made it with one of these. I mean he was such a nice guy, he had children and grand children and I’m sure this is not what he or his family expected.” Dennis said. Dennis is thinking of revising his evacuation plan because of the number of people trying to escape all at once. “Think about it. How many people are in a high rise early on a Saturday morning? The place is full, on a weekday it would have been empty.” He said. “It didn’t take long to get from the 18^th floor to the 6th floor, but to get from the 6th floor and then out of the building went really slow due to the crowd of people trying to get out. I don’t know if people were trapped or elderly or what but we were jammed. I didn’t want to get trapped and I wasn’t in a position to help people because I wasn’t on supplied air like a fire fighter. In a situation like this people are going to panic and you have to get as many people out of the stairway as quickly as possible. The building should have had a person on the ground to move people along.

Once they got out of the building, they were in shock and were lingering by the exit where everyone else was trying to escape. If people had these masks on they would not be in such a panic and in a rush to take their lives into their own hands to get out because they would know they could survive. The people that need these things are the people who live or work in highrise buildings and there are a lot of people in high-rises. What the Parat mask does is knocks down the panic you feel and allows you to think clearly enough to make a decision so you can think about why you need to get out. It makes an enormous difference in that kind of situation.” He said.

Once Dennis was out of the building he had a lot of people come up to him, look at him in the bright orange hood and say, ‘I gotta get one of those.’ Because of that he went back to the company’s web-site and printed out information on the Parat C and already has handed it out during their Condo building meeting. “No doubt the Parat helped save my life. I’ve already recommended it to my family and those in the building.” He said. “I could really see me carrying one of these at work too. Sometimes you’re the first person at the scene and as police officers we’re taught don’t go into the burning building because we are not trained firefighters. You’re taught to notify the fire department, honk the squad car horn or siren to alert residents and clear the area for fire truck access - -but if you absolutely had to try to rescue someone - - you could do it with this hood. I’m kind of sold on these things.” He said.

Overview
Proper water treatment is a very important endeavor for all industrial and public enterprises. This is especially true for any application near a river, dam or lake. Water treatment produces organic and mineral sludges from filtration and sedimentation. Therefore, water treatment systems can be very complex consisting of pipelines, valves, and hybrid mechanical devices. Though the physical elements are a long-term constant, it is difficult to set up a proper control mechanism for the entire system. Quick, Easy, and Comprehensive Chemical Measurement

Though methane and carbon dioxide are generated in the largest quantities, many other substances can be found in landfill gas. Hydrogen sulfide (H₂S), a very toxic substance, is also a by-product of decaying organic material. Various fuels, oils, paints, solvents and other hydrocarbons may end up in the landfill. Even at these much smaller quantities, these compounds are toxic. Many of these chemicals give little or no warning through a sense of smell.

The Draeger-Tube system is the most form of gas and vapor measurement in the world. The system is easy to use, produces quick results, and offers the most comprehensive (over 500) choice of hazards detected.

The Draeger-Tube system consists of glass vials filled with chemical reagents. The hand operated accuor bellows pump pulls a calibrated amount of air through the tube. Should the targeted gas or vapor be present, the reagent inside the Tube changes color. A longer the length of color change is produced when more of the targeted chemical is present. A scale printed on the tube indicates the amount of gas or vapor present.

Landfill Gas: Carbon Dioxide

Measuring toxic gases generated in a landfill

Large quantities (35-50 %Vol.) of carbon dioxide (CO₂)are produced in by decomposition of organic materials in a landfill. CO₂poses two safety concerns. First it will displace the available oxygen (O₂) for proper respiration. However, it is also a toxic gas, able to cause sudden and serious effects like dizziness, impaired judgment, or even unconsciousness from a relatively short exposure to levels found in a landfill.

The Draeger X-am 7000 Monitor can be equipped with and Infrared (IR) sensor for measuring 0-5.0 %Vol. and/or 0-100 %Vol. of CO₂allowing it to measure in both the toxicity range and higher levels experienced in landfill operation. The X-am 7000 Monitor can also be equipped with Methane, O₂,H₂S and CO sensor making it ideal for use in many landfill gas measurement applications.

The versatile monitor can also be equipped with a Photo-Ionization Detector (PID) which can detect and measure toxic amounts of fuels, solvents, paints and other chemicals that mistakenly find their way into a landfill. All measurements made by the X-am 7000 can be recorded on an internal datalogger for documentation purposes.

Landfill Gas: Methane

Monitor for Safety and Process Applications

The anaerobic decomposition of organic materials in a land fill produces large quantities (55-65 %Vol.) of methane (CH₄) in a low oxygen background. Additionally, relatively large quantities of gases like carbon dioxide (35-50 %Vol.) and hydrogen sulfide (1000 ppm) may also be present. This poses problems for conventional gas detectors. The catalytic oxidation sensors used in most combustible gas detectors requires oxygen to measure methane. Additionally these higher quantities of H₂S will cause these catalytic methane sensors to lose sensitivity over time. Most gas detectors are also limited to a measuring range of only 0-100 %LEL (0-5 %Vol.) of methane.

The Draeger X-am 7000 Monitor can be equipped with an Infrared (IR) based sensor for measuring 0-100 %LEL and 0-100 %Vol. of methane. Unlike conventional catalytic combustible gas detectors, the IR sensor does not need oxygen to operate and is completely unaffected by sulfur bearing compounds. The X-am 7000 is ideally suited for making both safety and process style measurements.

The X-am 7000 is completely dust-proof and waterproof (IP-67), even submersion in water does not bother the electronics or sensors. The integral rubber boot allows this monitor allows this monitor to withstand the most challenging industrial conditions. The internal pump can draw a sample from up to 150 ft (45m) away, strong enough to measure deep inside any vent hole or well. As one of Parker's leading hose distributors in the country, the Hose & Fittings team at Cross reminds customers never to mix and match components. To ensure the safest hose assembly practices and highest quality hose assemblies, these are key points and recommendations:

DO NOT

assemble another make of hose fitting on Parker hose
assemble a Parker hose fitting on another make of hose
crimp Parker hose and fitting with a crimper other than Parker approved crimpers
crimp other manufacturers' hose and fittings in Parker crimpers

Parker's recommendation on mixing and matching different manufacturer's hoses, fittings and crimping equipment fall right in line with standard industry specifications, specifically SAE J1273.

With the influx of generic, look-alike, and/or knock-off hose and fitting manufacturers today, it is important to point out and correct some of the common misconceptions that are prevalent in the marketplace today:

Misconeption: the fittings look alike; therefore they will perform the same
Correction: despite the fact that some manufacturers' fittings my look like a Parker fitting (including stainless steel), they have not been approved or qualified for use on a Parker hose. A fitting requires significant testing and final qualification by the manufacturer in order for a fitting to be approved for use on a hose.

Misconception: I can use a Parker fitting on a different manufacturer's hose because it meets the same industry specification as the Parker hose (i.e. 100R1)
Correction: just because a competitive manufacturer's hose may meet an industry specification does not mean that it is approved to be used with a Parker fitting.

Misconception: all crimpers are the same and as long as the crimp looks good and I am close to the recommeded crimp diameter, the hose assembly should be fine.
Correction: a battery of tests and qualification procedures are conducted prior to any formal crimp specification being released by engineering. Parker publishes and recommends crimp diameters for all its hose and fitting combinations and does not support anything outside of their published specs.

Here's an example for Liquid Handling:

A manufacturer of laboratory automation equipment needed electromechanical sub-assemblies for integration into an automated liquid handling machine. This machine would be required to operate at close to 100% duty cycle, twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week in a production laboratory environment for liquid analysis. A three-axis motion system was needed for moving the dispenser assembly over an array of microtiter plates. The travel envelope of the system was 800mm X 300mm X 75mm. The customer would assemble, integrate, and program the completed system which included the X, Y, Z system, motors, drives, and control panel.

Parker Life Sciences' systems and products, offered at "Selectable Levels of Integration," enabled a perfect fit solution to be found from standard catalog linear tables. Based on travel, load, throughput, and other performance criteria, the LXR linear-motor table and XR ball-screw table were selected as the primary mechanical components for this three-axis system. Two 404LXR units comprised the X & Y axes and a smaller 401XR was selected for the Z axis. Flexible options such as a long life cable management system, electric brakes, and inter-axis pinning greatly simplified the integrator's efforts.

Parker's ability to provide tables, motors, drives, guarding, and accessories, minimized the possibility of making costly mistakes which often occurs when components acquired from different manufacturers are not matched and sized correctly.

Analytical Instruments example

A manufacturer of lab automation analytical instruments presented the challenge of moving XYZ motion in a 300 x 300 x 100 mm stroke range in a package weighing less than 10 lbs and small enough to be portable. The customer needed light weight motion for smaller power requirements and ease of portability. The customer also needed a tightly integrated solution to minimize the instrument footprint.

Parker met the design challenges with their new LCR Series linear actuators and ion stepper drives combined with the LV Stepper motors ina complete system solution designed specifically for the application at hand utlizing these short lead time products.
